Every online interaction leaves a trace. Whether posting on social media, making an online purchase, or simply browsing the web, individuals continuously generate a digital footprint<\/strong> that can persist long after the original activity has ended. As personal data becomes increasingly valuable and widely shared, understanding the long-term implications<\/strong> of these digital traces<\/strong> is an essential aspect of digitale verantwoordelijkheid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital footprints<\/strong> can be either active or passive. Active footprints<\/strong> result from deliberate actions<\/strong>, such as sharing content, completing online profiles, or commenting on digital platforms. Passive footprints<\/strong> are created through data collected in the background<\/strong>, including browsing activity, location information, and behavioural data used by digital services. Recognising this distinction helps learners better understand how their personal information is generated, collected, and used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation<\/strong> (GDPR) provides individuals with the right to request the deletion of personal data<\/strong> under specific circumstances, a provision commonly known as the “right to be forgotten.”<\/em> Despite its importance, many people remain unaware of this right or uncertain about how to exercise it. This is particularly relevant for younger generations, who engage extensively with digitale technologie\u00ebn<\/strong> while often underestimating the persistence of their online presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digitale verantwoordelijkheid<\/strong> education can help bridge this gap by developing learners’ awareness of both their digital footprint and their data rights. Within the DIRECT project<\/strong>, learners are encouraged to critically examine their online presence, reflect on the consequences of digital actions<\/strong>, and make informed decisions about sharing personal information.
