Digital responsibility is a set of practices and behaviour that helps SMEs to use data and digital technologies in a way that is socially, economically, technologically, and environmentally responsible. [1]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is it important for SMEs to measure digital responsibility?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If SMEs do not measure digital responsibility, it stays abstract which can lead to no accountability and no proof of value. With measurement, SMEs can show <\/strong>customers, employees, investors, and regulators that they are compliant, trustworthy, and competitive. SMEs also do not need complex systems because even basic KPIs can show progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to measure and how to measure it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data & privacy<\/strong>: number of regular privacy audits, number of staff trained in data privacy [2]<\/a>, number of data breaches reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsible use of AI: <\/strong>number of staff trained in responsible use of AI, number of monitoring and auditing processes to track the performance and impact of AI system over time, number of AI models that were testes to ensure that they are unbiased, accurate, and fit for purpose. [3]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability: <\/strong>number ofreports onenergy consumption<\/strong> associated with digital technologies and infrastructure (data centers, servers, and devices), carbon footprint, electronic waste recycled. [4]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees: <\/strong>number of digital upskilling programs, number of reverse mentorship programs, where younger employees guide older colleagues, initiatives for promotion of healthy digital work habits, such as setting boundaries for digital communication (\u201ctech detox\u201d initiatives). [5]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transparency:<\/strong> number of published consumer perception surveys [6]<\/a>, frequency of transparency reports [7]<\/a>, availability of clear and accessible privacy and data use policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measuring digital responsibility is an opportunity to strengthen trust, stimulate innovation, and create long-term resilience. Within this context, initiatives such as DIRECT<\/strong> are important, as they provide SMEs with the tools and guidance that is needed to improve, and communicate their digital responsibility thoroughly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
